At its core Sophrology supports a deeper relationship with yourself

What is Sophrology?

Sophrology is an inner-development and therapeutic practice that helps you reconnect with your body, mind, and your unique energy - supporting a life lived with greater clarity, calm, and purpose.

At its core, Sophrology supports a deeper relationship with yourself.

It is a method of dynamic relaxation that combines gentle movement, breath awareness, contemplation, visualisation, and sound.

Through the practice, you learn to observe and work with thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations as interconnected expressions of your energy and inner experience.

From this increased awareness, you begin to make choices that shape a life that feels more aligned with who you truly are.

Sophrology is first practised with the guidance of a trained Sophrologist and then continued independently at home using short audio recordings.

It is easy to integrate into daily life - no equipment, no special clothing, and even 10 minutes a day can lead to meaningful and lasting change.

You can explore Sophrology further, and read how I see it as a key tool for contemporary life in my blogs.

For individuals and organisations

Sophrology is for anyone seeking greater balance, energy, and connection- particularly during periods of stress, high demand, or transition.

It is commonly used to support challenges such as:

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Insomnia and ongoing fatigue

  • Burnout and overwhelm

  • Reduced focus or mental clarity

  • Chronic pain and physical tension

Beyond symptom support, Sophrology is a valuable resource during life transitions - such as midlife, career change, or parenthood - when adaptability, clarity, and inner stability become especially important.

Sophrology is widely used in performance and leadership contexts.

Athletes, executives, and teams apply it to strengthen focus, emotional regulation, and sustainable performance in demanding environments.

A practice with strong roots

Sophrology was created in the 1960s by Spanish neuropsychiatrist Dr. Alfonso Caycedo, originally to support patients with severe trauma.

Sophrology brings together influences from ancient wisdom traditions - such as Raja Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, and Japanese Zen - with contemporary, evidence-based practices including progressive muscle relaxation, autogenic training, and neuro-linguistic programming.

This synthesis allows the practice to be both contemplative and dynamic, experiential and practical.

Over the years it has been widely practiced in French-speaking countries - even reimbursed by health insurance in Switzerland and France.

Today it is a growing practice across the UK, US, and beyond.

If you are keen to rebalance your energy, and manage your daily stress and anxiety, then Sophrology is for you.

Sophrology will help you to reconnect with your inner self, help you regulate your thoughts and emotions, and help you to feel more at ease with yourself and life in general.

Sophrology removes many of the barriers people encounter with meditation and mindfulness practices.

It is short, simple, and designed to fit into everyday life - at home or at work.

Practices are done seated in a chair, with no need for special clothing or equipment, making them easy to integrate into busy schedules and professional environments.

Unlike traditional meditation, Sophrology is dynamic, combining gentle movement with awareness to support engagement rather than prolonged stillness.

And unlike many mindfulness approaches, Sophrology is structured. You practise Sophrology within a clear, guided session, and over time its effects naturally carry into daily life - making awareness and presence easier to access without having to remember to “do” mindfulness.

Sophrology is secular and inclusive, and can be practised on its own or alongside other therapeutic or personal development approaches.

This unique combination of accessibility, movement, and structure makes it particularly well suited to modern Western lifestyles.

“Simple, structured practices that made a genuine difference - mentally and physically - without pressure or belief required.”

A structured pathway for inner-growth

Sophrology is not a one-off practice.

Its structured approach offers a clear pathway for progression and inner growth, allowing you to consciously evolve over time.

Practice by practice, you cultivate greater body awareness, emotional regulation, mental clarity, and inner stability - supporting both personal development and professional performance.

Because Sophrology is practised regularly and progressively, its effects are cumulative.

Over time, the skills you develop during practice become available in everyday situations - how you respond to stress, relate to others, make decisions, and manage energy throughout the day.
