Have you ever felt scattered, mentally foggy, or unable to focus? Like your thoughts are jumping from one thing to another, and nothing really sticks? These are signs that you may be ungrounded - disconnected from the stabilising force of your body, your energy, and the earth beneath your feet.
In today’s fast-paced world, we spend much of our time in our heads: overthinking, planning, worrying. It’s easy to lose connection with our body’s innate intelligence - and with the calm clarity that arises when we’re truly present. Groundingis the practice of re-establishing this connection.
What Does It Mean to Be Grounded?
To be grounded means to be anchored in the present moment and in your body. It’s the energetic state of stability, safety, and presence. When grounded, your nervous system settles, your thoughts slow down, and your energy flows more coherently.
In Sophrology, grounding is foundational. Every session begins by reconnecting to your breath and body awareness. Through focused breathing and gentle body scans, you begin to settle into yourself, quiet the mind, and access a deeper, calmer state of presence.
From an energy medicine perspective, grounding ensures that your personal energy system is connected to the Earth’s electromagnetic field. Donna Eden refers to this as plugging into a “universal power grid” that feeds and balances your system. When this connection is weak, you’re more susceptible to stress, illness, and emotional overwhelm.

Why Is Grounding Important?
Here are just a few reasons grounding matters - especially for people navigating midlife transitions, career shifts, or chronic stress:
It calms the nervous system. Grounding activates the parasympathetic “rest and repair” state, helping you regulate anxiety and overwhelm.
It enhances clarity and decision-making. When grounded, you’re less reactive and more able to access your inner wisdom.
It strengthens boundaries. A grounded energy field is less likely to be swayed by other people’s emotions or external chaos.
It supports healing and transformation. In the words of Dr. Joe Dispenza, “You can’t create a new future from the energy of survival.” Grounding moves you out of survival mode and into creation.
As Prune Harris, energy expert and medical intuitive, beautifully says: “Your grounding system is not a passive process - it’s an active relationship between your body and the Earth. It’s your lifeline to vitality.”
Grounding Helps You Release What You Don’t Need
Grounding isn’t just about bringing energy in—it’s also about letting energy go. When we’re emotionally charged or energetically overloaded (which can easily happen in busy work environments, city life, or during times of emotional upheaval), grounding acts as a natural release valve. It helps you discharge excess mental, emotional, and energetic build-up - down and out- through the body and into the earth.
Whether it’s tension from a difficult conversation, emotional residue from someone else’s energy, or just too much “doing,” grounding allows you to clear the static so you can return to yourself. As Jeffrey Allen often teaches, energy hygiene is just as vital as physical hygiene- and grounding is the first step.

Grounding Practices You Can Try Today
There’s no one-size-fits-all. The key is finding what works for you. Here are a few practices I often draw from in my work with clients and in my own life:
🌬️ 1. Breath and Body Awareness (Sophrology)
Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath. Simply follow the natural rhythm - no need to change it. Then, slowly scan your body from head to toe, noticing any sensations such as tension or warmth. You notice your upright position - between the earth and the sky - and your connection to the Earth. This mindful awareness gently reconnects you to your inner landscape and anchors you in the here and now.
🌍 2. Energy Medicine “Hook-Up” and “Heaven Rushing In” (Donna Eden)
These Eden Energy Medicine techniques help realign your energy and centre you. Try placing one hand on your forehead and one over your navel while breathing deeply for 1–2 minutes. You may feel yourself drop into a calmer, more integrated state.
🔥 3. Root Chakra Awareness (Jeffrey Allen)
Visualise a grounding cord extending from your tailbone or pelvis into the Earth’s centre. See it as a beam of light, a tree root, or a magnetic tether - whatever works for you. Breathe and feel your energy settle downward.
🌸 4. Prune Harris’ "Grounding Pathways"
Spend 1-2 minutes tracing figure eights with your hands around your legs and feet, or simply walking barefoot in nature while gently tapping your thighs. Her work reminds us that grounding is not just mental- it’s movement-based and rhythmic.
🌀 5. Heart-Brain Coherence (Dr. Joe Dispenza)
Place both hands over your heart, breathe slowly, and bring to mind a renewing emotion (gratitude, compassion, joy). This anchors you in the present and creates physiological harmony - a powerful way to “land” in your body and energy field.
How I Use Grounding in Daily Life
For me, grounding starts with something as simple as breath awareness. Most mornings, I begin my day with a few minutes of conscious breathing - just noticing my inhale and exhale, feeling my feet on the floor, and returning to my centre. I often visualise myself as a tree, with strong roots growing deep into the earth, anchoring me with stability and strength. This image helps me feel supported by the Earth’s energy, no matter what the day brings. Alternatively, and especially in summer time, simply being barefoot on grass or sand, and consciously appreciating this connection with the Earth does wonders.
The grounding practice is especially meaningful for me because I’ve moved a lot throughout my life - living across seven countries on three continents. With so many changes in geography, language, and community, cultivating a sense of inner rootedness is essential. Grounding helps me create a consistent internal home, wherever I am in the world.
Throughout the day, I return to this simple practice. Especially when things get busy or I feel myself being pulled in multiple directions. I know I’m ungrounded when I become restless, try to do too many things at once, or zoom in on minor details that don’t really impact the bigger picture. I lose clarity, and my energy scatters.
The key, I’ve learned, is not just knowing how to ground - but recognising when I need to. For a long time, I didn’t realise these were signs of being energetically ungrounded. I thought that I was simply tired or stressed. Now I understand: awareness is the first step. The moment I notice I’m ungrounded, I have the power to shift it.
